As a couple, how do you inspire each other to work out?
Peggy: For better or worse, competition figures into our relationship: Just who is in the best shape or, at our age, the worst, is the question.
Biard: I agree with Peggy that competition is a part of our relationship but when it comes to exercise and fitness I think it is more about mutual support than competition.
What are the benefits of working out together?
The family that plays together stays together. Our vacations usually involve a large mountain, jungle or desert (and a lot of fleas). This year we’re kayaking the Mekong.
What is your current workout routine?
We both workout in the gym with a trainer 23 times a week and hike together in Rock Creek Park on weekends.

How do you get motivated to work out? Does one person take charge and coax the other? How often do you workout and what do you do?
Terry: We’ve been married long enough that it’s not necessary to motivate each other. I have been a member of City Fitness since it opened in 1989. When Jaleh retired in 2001, it was only natural that we would start working out together. If any special motivation is needed, we get plenty of reinforcement from news reports about the health benefits of exercise.
Jaleh: Yes, Terry took the lead. We work out about 5 days per week: 3 days of cardio, and 2 days of weight training. We also try to walk a lot. Naturally, there are a lot of interruptionsdoctors’ appointments, housework, and the likebut we try to keep to our fixed schedule as much as possible.
Terry: I really believe that exercise requires repetition until it becomes a habit. That way, the costs of failing to exercise start becoming higher than the costs of exercising.
